Head of Energy Markets and Trading

The position

Sympower is seeking the Head of Energy Markets and Trading to lead Sympower's revenue optimization & trading strategy. Join our growing international team and help us accelerate the energy transition!

What you will do

The Head of Energy Markets and Trading will lead a team and strategy to oversee the following areas:

Lead Sympower's Revenue Optimization & Trading Strategy

• Own trading revenue and risk-adjusted returns across the portfolio

• Lead business cases for expansion into new revenue streams (eg: entering new markets, products)

• Build and maintain relationships with counterparties, brokers, and market participants

Commercial leadership

• Work closely with the commercial team and origination team to set business strategies for expansion, be the final say on the risk that the trading team can take in deal structuring and help defining different counterparty structures

Risk Management

• Ensure proper processes and mandates are in place for Risk management

• Work with risk team to define trading risk - enforce limits, position controls, imbalance risk, and the governance

Trading Operations Management

• Oversee the Energy Trading and Settlement desks, handling day-ahead, intraday trades, and ancillary services.

• Manage reconciliation, nominations, imbalance obligations, and ensure revenue maximization per MW.

• Manage and further develop the short term power trading desk

• Mentor traders and quants, scaling up of trading desk and ensuring trading support systems are in place 

• Work closely with quants to develop and implement profitable trading strategies for short‑term power products.

• Grow and define the trading operations across multiple jurisdictions and products

• Manage membership access and 3rd party contracts required by the trading desk

What you will need

• 10+ years of experience in energy trading or within the trading and operations department of an energy company

• Deep understanding of energy markets, trading operations, BRP requirements, and ETRM systems.

• Strong decision-making and analytical skills, with trading optimization knowledge.

• Entrepreneurial mindset with experience in scaling up and working with remote, multi-country teams.

• Quantitative mindset,  understanding of algorithmic trading, optimization models, and data-driven decision-making. Ability to translate complex quantitative insights into clear commercial and strategic recommendations for senior leadership.
